One of the most commonly asked questions about vertical blinds repair is where to find replacement vanes.
Usually what happens is the slat or vane breaks just above the hole at the top where it clips into the track.
As a result of exposure to the sun, the vinyl gets brittle and breaks out at the weak point just above the attachment slot.
This photo shows a good example of the kind of damage I’m talking about.

If you order some extras, be sure to store them flat – under a bed is good. Don’t try to stand them up in the corner, they’ll warp.
Measure the Slat, Not the Blind
When you measure for your replacement slats, you should measure the length of the old vane or slat only – not the overall length of the blind.
What if You Can’t Find Replacement Vanes?
If you don’t want to replace the whole blind but you can’t find matching replacements for broken vanes, there are repair clips that can be used to salvage old slats.
The clips are sturdy (they’re metal) and work very well. They have little teeth that grip the slat and hold on tight, even on a textured surface.
Vane savers are available for slats with curved or flat profiles and you can choose between unpainted (zinc) or painted (ivory or white) clips. You can find the best prices and free shipping for vane savers on eBay.
